RTVP
RTVP is short for Real-Time Visual Processing. And, regardless of every ATC and skill-based task, there is to perfect, RTVP is what truly makes one athlete superior to another. So, what is it? RTVP is the coordination of the eyes, brain, and body. With it, athletes can see and process (read) the infinitely variable number of in-game stimuli that require a functional reaction, in real-time. Combined with MTR-F (motor functionality) they will be able to react accordingly, without missing a beat.
THE EFFECT OF
TRAINING ON RTVP
The purpose of training is to develop MTR-F, as it relates to the execution and on-field performance of a required sport + position-related task, to the level of automatic. When these tasks become automatic, the brain is no longer required to utilize its conscious processing power to perform them. Consequently, the brain is now free to allocate that power to process the real-time events of the game.
TEMPO + IGL PHASES
Tempo + IGL Phases are an extremely important aspect of RTVP development. Together, they provide the foundation on which the eyes, brain, and kinetic chain begin to understand what they’re seeing in relation to what needs to be accomplished, how it can be accomplished, as well as, the skills and physical/ mental ability to accomplish it.
TEMPO
Tempo refers to the speed at which you work through drills. At Soldier Up Sports, we recommend four (4) Tempos:
- Walk. Great for familiarization with new and or challenging concepts.
- Jog. Great for warming up and or slowing things down a bit to fine-tune and or refocus development.
- Run. Great for improving RTVP and MTR-F in a position group or team setting. Especially, for athletes who can demonstrate solid execution of skills and or related group/ team concepts at a Walk and Jog.
- Full Speed. Full Speed is great for developing increased RTVP in capable athletes. It is also great for identifying deficiencies. Deficiencies at this tempo should prompt a reduction in tempo and or IGL Phase.
*Performing at Full Speed before you can demonstrate solid execution at a Walk, Jog, or Run, will hinder RTVP and MTR-F development in most athletes.
IGL PHASES
IGL Phases refer to the grouping of athletes, in order to, provide them the opportunity to focus on and work through each phase of the game. At Soldier Up Sports, we recommend three (3) IGL Phases:
- Individual. The Individual Phase allows athletes to focus on and work through the individual skills and tasks required at their position.
- Group. The Group Phase allows athletes the opportunity to work in a variety of position groups to focus on and work through how their position-specific skills and tasks can and will be impacted by other positions during competition.
- Live. The Live Phase brings the entire team together to focus on and work through how the entire team functions as a unit against a competing team.
*To maximize RTVP development when using Tempo + IGL Phases… each Tempo should be executed across all IGL Phases until execution at that tempo becomes automatic.
DEVELOPING RTVP
RTVP is developed by:
- Developing sport and or position-specific tasks to the level of automatic.
- Conducting walk-throughs at the individual, group, and or live phases.
- Reducing the IGL Phase based on deficiencies in IGL execution.
- Conducting jog-throughs at the individual, group, and or live phases.
- Reducing the Tempo based on deficiencies in tempo execution.
- Reducing the IGL Phase based on deficiencies in IGL execution.
- Conducting run-throughs at the individual, group, and or live phases.
- Reducing the Tempo based on deficiencies in tempo execution.
- Reducing the IGL Phase based on deficiencies in IGL execution.
- Going full speed at the individual, group, and or live phases.
- Reducing the Tempo based on deficiencies in tempo execution.
- Reducing the IGL Phase based on deficiencies in IGL execution.
Again, regardless of every ATC and skill-based task there is to perfect, RTVP is what truly makes one athlete superior to another. Why? Because RTVP and RTVP alone is responsible for every aspect of on-field decision-making there is. Process the game too slowly, play slow. And, when you play slow, no matter how big, fast, quick, smart, or strong you are, you’ll miss opportunities, not make plays, always come up short, and never be able to compete at higher levels of competition.
Process the game fast, and play fast. And, when you play fast, even if you’re not the biggest, fastest, quickest, smartest, or strongest athlete on the field, you’ll create and maximize opportunities, make the play, never come up short, and be able to compete at any level of competition.
Now, serious RTVP in conjunction with developing ATCs and MTR-F to your highest potential will undoubtedly transform you into a MONSTER! And, as far as we’re concerned, the lack of focus on RTVP is what prevents the majority of athletes from ever being as good as they could be. But, with it, we can finally start flooding the HS, College, and Professional levels of sport with the best and most amazing caliber of athletes ever seen.
