1. BREAK STEP.

The BREAK STEP is used for immediately changing direction back toward the line of scrimmage (180° in the opposite direction). EX:

  • IF: the ball carrier gets past you (QB or RB) and you need to immediately change direction to quickly get back on top of them.
  • THEN: Break-Step.

2. BREAK & GO.

BREAK & GO footwork is used for immediately changing direction back toward the line of scrimmage (180° in the opposite direction), then, changing direction again to stay on top of a more elusive ball carrier. EX:

  • IF: the QB steps up in the pocket and immediately changes direction a second time to break whatever angle you may have on him.
  • THEN: Break and Go.

3. CUT.

Cut footwork is used to make sharp Left and Right turns in pursuit of the ball carrier.

4. OPEN.

OPEN footwork is used to pursue and or get after ball carriers attempting to use depth and the open field to get away from you. Ensure that when you open you lock onto the correct angle/ shoulder mechanic in preparation for any secondary moves. EX:

  • IF: the QB is rolling back and around towards either sideline.
  • THEN: Open after them. Ensure, you open on the correct angle/ shoulder mechanic.

5. PIVOT.

PIVOT footwork is used to immediately change direction 180° out of an initial cut or open, in order to, stay on top of a ball carrier that cuts back against your angle.
