SECTION 1:
PURSUIT.
Pursuit is attacking the ball carrier (BC) on the correct angle (shoulder mechanic) to stop and or limit their forward progress. When pursuing the BC, defensive personnel must:
1. Make The Correct Read.
- When it comes to pursuit, making the correct read is about identifying your angle to the BC (1:3, 3:1) and identifying your help and/or identifying that you are the help.
2. React.
- Accelerate on the correct angle to cut off the BC (tackle) and force them back inside.
3. Shed Any Blocks.
- Shed any blocks en route to the BC.
4. Slice.
- Instead of breaking down with the ball carrier, take one more step and turn in, to avoid going flat or being put on skates.
- See “Slicing” lesson.
5. Finish.
- Make the tackle.
- That or, slow down the BC enough that your help can assist in making the tackle.
